Roadway Resurfacing in Fall/Winter 2017-2018

Providing you with a smooth, reliable drive is important to all of us at South Bay Expressway. Over time, streets and highways can deteriorate and South Bay Expressway is now ten years old. To keep the roadway in good condition, a roadway resurfacing project will begin in fall 2017.

A method called bonded wearing course will be applied, which involves application of a quick drying asphalt layer on top of worn and cracked parts of the roadway. First, we'll determine which sections need to be ground down to make the roadway as level as possible. Next, we anticipate several areas will need to be dug out and refilled with asphalt. If weather permits, the final asphalt layer is anticipated to be laid in early November. The result will be a new, smooth surface that is usually drivable within one hour.

The repaving project is anticipated to take approximately 90 days to complete and some lane closures will occur during off-peak hours. Please take notice of any posted signs, and drive, as usual, with caution. Repaving on- and off-ramps will be part of a future project.

South Bay Rapid  Construction

Construction is underway on South Bay Rapid,  a $128 million project that will provide South Bay travelers with a reliable and frequent transportation choice. Once completed, South Bay Rapid will include 12 transit stations along a 26-mile route from the Otay Mesa Port of Entry to Downtown San Diego via eastern Chula Vista, connecting employment and activity centers in Downtown San Diego and South County. Service in the South Bay is expected to begin in early 2019.

A new guideway bridge is being constructed which will allow transit vehicles to cross over South Bay Expressway while maintaining high-frequency, limited-stop service. Additionally, the guideway bridge will improve walking and biking access by connecting residents and communities west of the toll road with retail and entertainment options on the east side. As construction of the guideway bridge continues, nearby motorists can expect temporary lane closures, detours, reduced lane widths, some night and weekend work, equipment and signage, and construction vehicles traveling in and out of the median and along the outside shoulder in the construction area.
